What leash reactivity actually is

A reactive dog reacts disproportionately to a specific stimulus on lead — usually other dogs, sometimes bikes, joggers, or children. Typical signs: barking, lunging, growling, and occasionally redirecting at the owner.

Reactivity is not dominance or "bad behaviour". It's overwhelm: frustration (wants to greet, can't), fear (thinks the other dog is a threat) or both.

What makes things worse

The 8-week plan

Weeks 1-2: distance and management

Weeks 3-4: Look At That (LAT)

  1. A trigger appears at safe distance.
  2. Say "look" and reward as your dog looks at it.
  3. Repeat 5-10 times per encounter.
  4. Your dog learns: trigger = treat = no need to react.

Weeks 5-6: decrease distance

Weeks 7-8: parallel walking

When to call a professional

Look for a trainer accredited by APDT UK, IMDT, or Victoria Stilwell's PPG. UK cost: £50-90/session. Usually 4-8 sessions are enough for clear improvement.

How CanAI helps

Ask the AI chat for specific exercises based on whether reactivity is fear- or frustration-based. Log daily walks in CanAI tools to track progress. And remember: third-party liability cover is critical for any dog — even more so for a reactive one. Most UK pet insurance includes it.
