The Border Terrier — a working dog at heart
The Border Terrier originated on the Anglo-Scottish border in the 18th century, bred to bolt foxes alongside hunts. Recognised by the Kennel Club in 1920, it remains one of Britain's most enduring small terriers — a working dog that adapts remarkably well to family life.
Appearance and size
- Height: 33-40 cm.
- Weight: 5-7 kg.
- Coat: harsh, wiry double coat. Red, grizzle and tan, blue and tan, or wheaten.
- Lifespan: 13-15 years.
- Distinctive otter-shaped head.
Temperament
- Even-tempered for a terrier: less yappy than many small terriers.
- Brave and tenacious: working drive still strong.
- Affectionate: bonded to family, generally good with children.
- Sociable with other dogs: more so than most terriers.
- Strong prey drive: cats, rabbits, squirrels — keep on lead near wildlife.
- Notable diggers and escape artists: secure gardens essential.
Exercise needs
- 1-1.5 hours daily, ideally with off-lead time in safe areas.
- Love scent work, agility and earthdog activities.
- Cope with cold weather very well.
- Adaptable to flats if walked properly.
Grooming
- Hand-stripping 2-3 times per year is traditional — preserves coat texture.
- Weekly brush; never clipper (changes texture irreversibly).
- Bath only when necessary (every 6-8 weeks).
- Regular nail and ear checks.
Health
Generally one of the healthiest UK breeds, but watch for:
- Canine Epileptoid Cramping Syndrome (CECS): rare neurological condition specific to the breed.
- Patellar luxation occasionally.
- Heart issues in older dogs.
- Allergies and skin issues in some lines.
- Overall robust with long lifespans.
Family suitability
Pros: manageable size, robust health, good with kids and dogs, hardy, lives 13-15 years, easy travel companion.
Cons: strong prey drive, can dig, can wander if not securely fenced, terrier stubborn streak, demands physical and mental work.
